Description:
Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the pyrazolone
group. Phenylbutazone inhibits the biosynthesis of PGE2 and PGF2α.
Indications:
Inflammation and acute or chronic pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions in horses, cattle
and swine.
Contraindications:
Severe cardiac, hepatic or renal impairment, dehydration, hypovolemia or hypotension,
gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, blood dyscrasias, hypersensitivity to phenylbutazone.
Dosage and administration:
For very slow intravenous administration.
The recommended dose is no more than 4.4 mg phenylbutazone per kg body weight.
Horses, cattle and swine …. up to 1 ml per 45 kg body weight per day for no more than 5 days
Side effects:
Rarely, collapse following intravenous injection. Due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis,
certain individuals may experience gastric or renal intolerance.
Precautions and warnings:
Administer strictly IV. Reduce dose in foals, calves, piglets and geriatric animals. Do not exceed 4
g (20 ml) per animal per day, regardless of weight. Discontinue if no significant clinical response is
evident within 5 days. Do not administer concurrently with other NSAIDs, glucocorticosteroids,
nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic, or highly plasma bound drugs.
Withdrawal times:
Do not use in animals producing milk for human consumption.
Do not use in animals intended for human consumption.
Storage conditions:
Store dark and below 25°C. Do not freeze.
